School work experience
We do not offer work experience to under 18s due to the nature of our laboratories at the Quadram Institute. We operate containment level 2 laboratories and the level of training and experience needed to work safely means it is not practical to supervise relatively inexperienced people in the labs.
If you are at school and looking for work experience there may be other opportunities on the Norwich Research Park including:
Undergraduate placements
Many of our research groups welcome undergraduates to work on research projects during the summer holidays.
Students typically work in a laboratory for around eight weeks during the summer vacation. This provides an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand research experience in an internationally respected laboratory and is particularly useful for undergraduates who may be considering taking up a PhD studentship after they graduate. The ideal time for this experience is during the summer vacation following the second year of an undergraduate course.
If you are at university and interested in a placement at the Quadram Institute, please make your request as early as possible as places are limited.
We are not usually able to fund year-long placements. There might be opportunities to seek grant funding for the placement. Research group leaders at the Quadram can help you with your application, but you need to approach them in plenty of time.
We would advise you to read the profiles of our research leaders. Pick up to three researchers and email them individually to ask if they would be interested in hosting your placement; include a short intro about yourself, your course, your scientific ambitions and why their lab is the one for you. If the group leader accepts you into their group for a placement you can work with them on a grant application. The group leader might have other funding routes but funding is not always available.
Here are some funding ideas for short-term placements only:
