15th May 2026

Local MP for South Norfolk, Ben Goldsborough, visited our clinical research and human studies teams who carried out the pioneering sunshine tomatoes study using gene-edited tomatoes developed at the John Innes Centre.

Participants consumed a portion of tomato soup daily for three weeks and the results are being analysed to see if this led to an increase in the active form of vitamin D that helps us stay healthy.

Ben Goldsborough MP said: “It was great to meet with staff to discuss the ViTaL-D study. “This is one of the most exciting clinical trials in the country right now, with the potential to transform health and nutrition. Once again, South Norfolk is leading the way to a healthier future.

“The amazing staff of the Quadram Institute have my full respect and admiration, and I will always do my utmost to support their work in my role as MP.”

Head of Human Studies Dr Antonietta Hayhoe said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome Ben Goldsborough MP to the Quadram Institute and showcase the Vital-D study delivered by our clinical research and human studies teams alongside colleagues at the John Innes Centre and the University of Surrey.

It was also fantastic to discuss with Ben how we can strengthen connections with our local community and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to engage with and participate in our research studies”.
