Abstract

Colorectal adenomas are benign lesions which form a critical step in progression to colorectal cancer. Adenomas can be screened for (using faecal bloods) and removed relatively easily, but patients are subsequently at elevated risk of further adenomas. Nutritional strategies for primary prevention of adenoma occurrence are well known and broadly follow the same guidance as for prevention of colorectal cancer. To date nutritional interventions for secondary prevention of adenoma (prevention of recurrence rather than occurrence) have had mixed outcomes. This presentation will explore the literature in this area, will investigate what is known about the mechanistic basis of recurrence and in turn how this may revise approaches to the design of trials and interventions. The presentation will draw on work in this area by Dr Corfe’s own research group using combinations of proteomics, cell biology, in vivo and in cellulo, and ultimately a range of in silico approaches to understand adenoma recurrence and to suggest new approaches to prevention.

Speaker Biography

Bernard Corfe is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield’s Medical School. His work is at the interface of nutrition and gastroenterology exploring how nutrients and diet may influence the outcome or management of colorectal conditions. His work spans molecular scale through to human interventions and has resulted in over 80 peer reviewed papers and has been covered in The Times and BBC1 inter alia. He is on the editorial boards of European Journal of Nutrition and The International Journal of Experimental Pathology, is on the steering committee of the NIHR Cancer and Nutrition Infrastructure Collaboration, spent six years as Nutrition Society’s scientific lead for cellular and molecular nutrition and was elected as a trustee of Nutrition Society in 2017.
