Exploring the mechanism of nutrient acquisition by prominent members of the human gut microbiota
Speaker: Dr David Bolam, Senior Lecturer, University of Newcastle will present seminar entitled: Exploring the mechanism of nutrient acquisition by prominent members of the human gut microbiota
Jointly Hosted by: Nathalie Juge, Quadram Institute Bioscience and Richard Bowater, Biochemical Society, UEA
Topic
Bacteroidetes are prominent members of the colonic microbiota and as such play a key role in health and nutrition. In this talk I will discuss some recent work from our lab that provides mechanistic insight into nutrient import by Bacteroidetes spp, which is of major significance for understanding the human-microbiota symbiosis.
Biography
Dave Bolam is a Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University in the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences. His research focuses on understanding the molecular basis for nutrient acquisition and utilisation by the human gut microbiota.
The Bolam lab use a range of biochemical, microbiology, genetic and structural techniques to study the molecular mechanisms utilised by our resident gut bacteria to recognise, acquire and degrade complex glycans. The results of this research have applications in a number of areas including the development of personalised nutrition approaches to optimise microbiota function for the benefit of human health.
