Battling the superbugs – understanding when, why and how antimicrobial resistance evolves

I have recently joined the IFR and work in my group will be focussing on the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance with particular interests in evolution within biofilms and the regulation of multidrug efflux pumps. We study real world isolates and use in vitro mutagenesis and evolution experiments to study how enteric pathogens can respond to stress and examine the fitness implications of acquisition of resistance. We aim to ultimately identify interventions which will prevent infection or contamination and minimise selective pressure for emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
