LGBTQIA+ Leaders in Nature Conservation and STEM: A Panel
22 July 2025 - 22 July 2025
7:30
Norwich Arts Centre
Hosted by: Norwich Arts Centre
Two of our staff and students will be taking part in the panel event at Norwich Arts Centre
A friendly, accessible panel of LGBTQIA+ people in nature, the environment and STEM is hosted by Norfolk Wildlife Trust and brings together Sam Rowe and Gab Astorga of the Quadram Institute, Ella Warren-Cooke and Nick Acheson (chair) of Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Dr Ellie Leech of the British Trust for Ornithology.
Contributors will discuss their experience as professionals in the field, what challenges they still experience, and the encouragement they can offer to young LGBTQIA+ people hoping to enter nature and STEM as a career.
Dr Sam Rowe is Project Manager of Centre for Microbial Interactions. Sam previously completed a MSci degree in chemistry from Imperial College London and a PhD in chemistry from the University of East Anglia. His PhD research involved developing a new system for artificial photosynthesis where electric bacteria capture solar energy to make valuable chemicals such as hydrogen. Following his PhD, Sam has worked in science communication and engagement roles.
Gabriel Astorga is a PhD student modelling metabolic capability and phylogeny of host and environmental niche adaptation in E. coli. Gab produces online science communication videos and recently won the Amplify x New Voice Future Presenter Award.
