Illustrations inspired by our upcoming human studies will be on display in the public atrium at the Quadram Institute.

Along with being a hub for life science research, Norwich is home to a top creative arts university, Norwich University of the Arts. 

At the Quadram Institute we run human studies to learn more about how we can improve human health. Our Human Studies team work with both scientists, NHS clinicians and research nurses to run human studies as part of our current Food, Microbiome and Health research programme.

Our Quadram Institute Human Studies Team, together with our Communications team, worked with second year students on the Illustration course at the Norwich University of the Arts. The exciting collaborative project focused on communicating current and upcoming human studies at the Quadram Institute. The key aim of the collaboration was to raise awareness around human studies and encourage participation from those eligible to take part in the research. This is the third year we have been part of the collaborative teaching unit, with previous years collaboration focusing on communicating other upcoming human studies, and the collaboration the year before including briefs on food safety.

The collaboration involved a visit from Year 2 Illustration students and their tutor to the Quadram Institute building where they saw inside their state-of-the-art laboratories and met with several researchers and staff, including PhD students, Postdoctoral Researchers and Support Staff, to learn more about their research into Microbes and Food Safety and Food, Microbiome and Health research programme.

Featured in the exhibition is a selection of work-in-progress and outcomes from this collaboration. The illustrations inspired by upcoming studies range from a bespoke nail set to raise awareness of a healthy gut microbiome to digital imagery for Instagram of bergamots.
