I completed a BSc in Biochemistry at Newcastle university where I developed a keen interest in the gut microbiome and molecular biology.
My project at the Quadram Institute aims uncover the molecular mechanisms underpinning starch utilisation by Bifidobacteria in the guts of weaning infants. I will use a number of biochemical techniques to study the adaptations of Bifidobacteria during this crucial stage of life. Later on I also intend to employ metagenomic and metabolomic tools to track the distribution of starch degrading genes and determine their importance.
