Prof. Nick Loman
CLIMB Academic Director
I am Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection and Professor of Microbial Genomics and Bioinformatics at the University of Birmingham, and serve as Director of CLIMB (Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics) at the Quadram Institute.
As lead PI for the ARTIC 2.0 project, I work at the intersection of sequencing technology development, bioinformatics methods, and public health microbiology.
My research focuses on developing and applying cutting-edge genomics and metagenomics approaches to infectious disease surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment. In my career, I led real-time genomic surveillance efforts during major international outbreaks, including Ebola in Guinea, Zika in Brazil, and most recently in the UK’s COVID-19 response through the COG-UK consortium, where CLIMB processed over 3.5 million SARS-CoV-2 genomes.
At the Quadram Institute, I am excited to be leading CLIMB’s evolution into a sustainable National Capability that will enable the next generation of microbial bioinformatics research, supporting large-scale pathogen genomics, microbiome research, and enhanced collaboration between health, food safety, and veterinary agencies. Through CLIMB, we have enabled over £40M of UK research funding and trained more than 1,500 scientists, and I look forward to expanding this impact as we build new partnerships and capabilities for the future of microbial genomics.
