My research focuses on the mucosal immune response in human intestinal inflammation, with particular regards to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and coeliac disease. Currently, the main topics of my research are (1) proteolytic degradation of biologic agents as a mechanism of primary non-responsiveness in IBD; (2) assessment of the therapeutic potential of newly synthesized compounds in IBD using inflamed IBD mucosal samples.
I joined the Norwich Medical School in 2015 as a NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Gastroenterology and as Academic Specialist Registrar in Gastroenterology at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Previously, I have been awarded a PhD in Immunobiology from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and I have completed my clinical training in Internal Medicine in Italy.
During my PhD, I showed that anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-a agents are degraded in a differential manner by matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 and MMP-12, and that, after degradation by mucosal proteases, anti-TNF-a agents lose their TNF-a neutralisation ability (Biancheri P et al., Gastroenterology 2015;149:1564-74). I am currently continuing this study at the Quadram Institute, having obtained funding from the CORE Foundation (Trainee Research Award) and from the Academy of Medical Sciences (Starter Grant for Clinical Lecturers).
