Bacterial Genomics and Metagenomics

My overriding research interest is the study of animal gastrointestinal microbial communities, primarily that of the domestic chicken and horse. This interest extends to understanding the complex interactions between microbial communities within this environment, particularly microbiota-pathogen interactions. I completed my PhD towards the end of 2019 at the University of Liverpool, focusing primarily on the use of early-life modulation of the chicken microbiome to control opportunistic enteric pathogens – namely Campylobacter jejuni. In my current role, I use a combination of metagenomic sequencing and microbiological culturing approaches to characterise the functional and taxonomic diversity of the avian microbiome.
