Understanding organosulfur cycling in the human gut and the impacts on health
I conduct bioinformatics analyses on samples from a wide range of organisms and environments to investigate the production and cycling of DMSP, other organosulfur compounds, and climate-active gases.
My research primarily uses metagenomics and metatranscriptomics data informed by functional analyses of key enzymes, combined with comprehensive process measurements to determine the diversity, abundance, activity, and global distribution of microbes involved in these metabolic processes. This work enables the prediction of which microorganisms drive organosulfur cycling, how they do so, and the significance of these processes across diverse environments. My current research focuses on the production and cycling of DMSP in oxic–anoxic saltmarsh sediments and in coastal seawater from the Western Channel Observatory.
