Pint Of Science Norwich Goes Virtual for 2021

26th April 2021

The UK’s Pint of Science festival went online for 2021, with scientists across the Quadram Institute and Norwich Research Park bringing their research to screens worldwide.

Pint of Science has grown astronomically since its inception in 2013. From Monday 17 May to Thursday 20 May 2021, a series of free live shows, experiments, demonstrations, and a virtual sci-art exhibition, Creative Reactions, will be available online. Pint of Science UK’s YouTube channel hosted live evening shows at 6 pm, 7 pm and 8 pm (UK time) from over 35 locations across the country.

The Quadram Institute is involved in the free evening live show ‘Let’s Talk about Breast Health’, hosted on the final night of the festival, Thursday 20 May, from 7-8 pm. You can watch a recording of the event below.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in UK women. Research into this disease is ever ongoing as scientists and clinicians strive to improve patient outcomes. ‘Let’s Talk about Breast Health’ on Thursday 20 May from 7-8 pm will be hosted by Prof Anne-Marie Minihane and include a panel of expert speakers: Honorary Senior Lecturer Dr Lisa Crossman, UKRI Future Leaders Fellow Dr Rianne Lord, and QI scientist Nancy Teng. The panel will explore the use of AI in mammograms, look into metal-based drugs as a new breast cancer therapy and see how the gut may influence breast health.

Norwich scientists were also involved in the online evening shows ‘Our Priceless Oceans’ and ‘Sleeping Synapses: Building Brains in Bed’ on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 May. In addition to the live shows on YouTube, Norwich scientists shared their research on Twitter using videos, drawings, GIFs, and photos posted under the hashtag #Pint21Norwich.

We are really excited to bring Pint of Science back to Norwich this year and give everyone the chance to hear about amazing local research from the comfort of their home. All the live shows are interactive, so you’ll be able to hear about some great science projects and ask questions directly to the host and speakers without having to move from your sofa. We’d like to thank all the local volunteers for their hard work putting the shows together!
