Here in the UK, the Quadram Institute is at the forefront of research to help understand the interaction between food and our microbes. Its group leader in food and health, Dr Maria Traka, PhD, says: "Although there is no consensus of what a healthy gut microbiome is, it seems that gut microbial diversity is a key characteristic.  Having a diverse gut microbial population can potentially make our gut more resilient to imbalances that may occur due to our lifestyle."
