Can We Trust Untargeted Metabolomics? Results of the Metabo-Ring initiative, a large-scale, multi-instrument inter-laboratory study
Metabolomics, 10, 6
This paper reports the outcome of a ring-trial involving 16 different technological platforms used for acquiring metabolomics profiles of the same two series of biological samples. Two sets of experiments were carried out, one with relatively large, and the other low, differences between samples. The platforms included different set-ups of the two most popular techniques in the field of metabolomics, namely nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). Multivariate statistical analyses were used to estimate the convergence between the information yielded by each approach. This suggested that despite heterogeneity of the analytical conditions and the data post-processing, the information was consistent across platforms.
