Outer Membrane Vesicles: Biogenesis, Functions, and Issues
Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews
This review focuses on non-lytic outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), a sub-type of bacterial extracellular vesicles (BMVs) produced by gram-negative organisms focusing on the mechanisms of their biogenesis, cargo, and function. Throughout, we highlight issues concerning the characterisation of OMVs and distinguishing them from other types of BMVs. We also highlight the shortcomings of commonly used methodology for the study of BMVs that impacts on the interpretation of their functionality and suggest solutions to standardise protocols for OMV studies.
