Our group aims to harness microbial genomics, metagenomics, bioinformatics and synthetic biology to understand how microbes evolve, spread, survive and compete in the food chain and to develop novel interventions to reduce the risk of foodborne illness and the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

We have pioneered the application of genomics in tracking the spread of AMR pathogens in hospitals and communities and the application of metagenomics as a tool in diagnosis of infection and in uncovering pathogens from the past. We are also interested in using synthetic biology to develop smart probiotics.
