Science in Norwich Day

21st March 2012

Norwich’s scientists will be taking over The Forum on Saturday for Science in Norwich Day, the annual showcase of the exciting science exploding out of Norwich. Scientists from Norwich’s world leading institutes on the Norwich Research Park, as well as local and national organisations, will be covering everything under the sun, and even on it.

There will be plenty of hands-on activities for all the family at this free event, from making slime to blowing bubbles, science busking, robots and how to have fun with DNA.

Scientists at the Institute of Food Research will be explaining exactly what a calorie is using their homemade bomb calorimeter.

At 10:30am, BBC’s Stargazing LIVE presenterer Mark Thompson and the Norwich Astronomical Society, will be observing the sun (when it comes out!), whilst the Open Air Laboratory will explore the murky depths of your local pond.

Interactive science shows every hour from 10:00am will mean that the Curve theatre in the Forum will resonate with the science of sound, or a collision of maths and magic, and the science of things that make you go eeuww.

Science in Norwich Day is supported by CUE East at UEA, whose scientists will be making hand lotion, showing the cuddly side of microbes and walking on custard. A giant tank will be explaining the science of waves and there will be the chance to make a DNA bracelet.

George Freeman MP, Adviser on Life Sciences to Rt Hon David Willetts MP, Minister of State for Universities and Science, is supporting Science in Norwich Day as a way of showcasing the opportunities science in Norfolk can offer.

“Norfolk’s world class Science and Research at the Norwich Research Park is helping create the technologies, businesses and jobs of tomorrow. We need to inspire a new generation of scientists and entrepreneurs to rise to the challenge, and the Science in Norwich Day is a great initiative.”
