Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join the Quadram Institute Bioscience as a Bioinformatics Scientific Programmer.
The role:
Bacteria pose many human challenges; from combatting antibiotic resistant pathogens to understanding health promoting factors in the human microbiome. This role will work with researchers to understand how bacteria interact with their environment and with each other. You will help to develop new bioinformatics tools to analyse huge sets of next generation sequencing data. You will apply and automate standard statistical and machine learning techniques to reveal new biology in the workings of various bacterial species.
To tackle these Big Data problems you will have big resources at your disposal such as: over 1,000 CPUs, over 1 PetaByte of storage and machines with TeraBytes of RAM. We offer the chance to work with world leading, cutting edge technologies both in IT and computational biology and give you the opportunity to broaden your skills using open source technologies within a bioinformatics context. You will gain experience of working with Big Data and cloud computing and have the opportunity to work with researchers on publishing new methodologies.
The ideal candidate:
Candidates should possess an MSc in computing, mathematics, physics, computational biology, bioinformatics or a related computational subject. A PhD is desirable but not essential.
All candidates should have strong proficiency in Linux, an ability to program in at least one programming language to an advanced level and an advanced understanding of statistics.
They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as the post will involve working with scientists from a broad range of backgrounds.
Additional information:
Salary on appointment will be within the range £39,150 to £47,850 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full time post for a period of 3 years.

About the Quadram Institute:
The Quadram Institute is a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research. Its mission is to understand how food and the gut microbiota are linked to the promotion of health and the prevention of disease. A partnership between Quadram Institute Bioscience (formerly the Institute of Food Research), the University of East Anglia, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and BBSRC, it brings together scientists and clinicians in a new state-of-the-art building. The Quadram Institute is based on the Norwich Research Park, one of Europe’s largest centres of life sciences and home of the John Innes Centre and The Earlham Institute.
