We are looking for a dynamic, proactive individual to lead a research programme on Food, Microbiome, Health (FMH) at Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), focusing on the benefits/limitations of moving towards crop-based diets. We are seeking to appoint an established Group Leader who will have the management capability to undertake the role of deputy head for our new research programme, starting in April 2023.

Background:

The Quadram Institute (QI) undertakes research in the broad areas of food health and food safety. We are now seeking to bring in a forward-thinking (Prof. of Microbiology/Nutrition) capable of contributing to the area of Food, Microbiome and Health, through developing their own research programme that studies the response of the microbiome to a diet that is becoming increasingly more plant-based. The candidate will be able to exploit the considerable resources available within QIB and help further establish the QI as a leader in Food/Microbiome/Health research.

The role:

The postholder will contribute to achieving the Quadram lnstitute’s research aims, which include understanding the role of the microbiome in human health and how dietary changes affect/promote microbial responses within the human gut. We have expertise that brings together excellence in model systems, food structure analysis, microbiology, imaging, genomics, bioinformatics and metabolomics in understanding bacterial behaviour and interactions within the host environment.

The postholder will also be expected to help develop the management of the new Institute Strategic Programme by acting as deputy to the current head.

The ideal candidate:

Applicants should have experience in the microbiology/microbiome/nutrition including specialist knowledge in key components of the gut microbiome. We particularly welcome applications from those with expertise in key components of the gut microbiota. Successful candidates will have a good publication record, obvious potential for attracting funding and most importantly, have a clear vision for collaborative research.

About the Quadram Institute:

The Quadram Institute is a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research. Its mission is to understand how food and the gut microbiota are linked to the promotion of health and the prevention of disease. A partnership between Quadram Institute Bioscience (formerly the Institute of Food Research), the University of East Anglia, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and BBSRC, it brings together scientists and clinicians in a new state-of-the-art building.
