Laboratory Technician (Microbiology and Molecular Biology)

Applications are invited for a Laboratory Technician to join the Mather group at the Quadram Institute in Norwich, UK

The Mather Group:

Research in the Mather group focuses on the genomics, metagenomics and source attribution of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The role:

The post holder will collect food products, and maintain microbiological and molecular workflows following standard operating protocols and appropriate laboratory practices. The position will support our busy and diverse research laboratory focusing on population dynamics and antimicrobial resistance of enteric bacteria in the food continuum.

Work will include the isolation of bacteria using culture methods; molecular preparation of samples for whole genome sequence analysis; generating and maintaining a culture and sample collection inventory; providing laboratory support for the Mather Research Group projects investigating microbial populations in the food chain.

Weekly workflow will also include driving to retail locations around Norfolk to purchase food products utilising predetermined sampling protocols.

The ideal candidate:

Candidates are expected to have a BSc or equivalent in biomedical science or similar, with hands-on experience in microbiology and molecular biology. Candidates should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively to meet deadlines. Candidates should possess a valid licence to drive in the UK, as the post will involve regular travel to collect food products from various locations, (own car not necessary as a hire vehicle can be provided).

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,300 to £29,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This is a full-time post for a period of 12 months.

About the Quadram Institute:

The Quadram Institute is a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research. It brings together clinical and non-clinical scientists in a new state-of-the-art building opening fully in summer 2018. It is based on the Norwich Research Park, one of the largest centres of life sciences in Europe, and home of the John Innes Centre, The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, The Earlham Institute and the University of East Anglia.
