Applications are invited for a Microbiologist to join the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), based in Norwich, UK.
Quadram Institute Bioscience is a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research. Its mission is to understand how food and the gut microbiota are linked to the promotion of health and the prevention of disease.
The Germ Free (GF) animal facility is part of the Core Science Resources, which provide core skills and facilities to all science programmes at Quadram Institute Bioscience. The GF facility breeds and maintains mice in a sterile environment contained in flexible film isolators, which provide a unique and powerful model system to investigate the impact microbial exposure/challenge has on host functions in health and diseases. The successful and continued operation of the GF facility relies on robust procedures to validate the germ-free status of the axenic animals.
The main purpose of this role will be the screening of samples from the germ-free facility, using existing microbial sterility testing protocols, to verify the samples are free from bacterial contamination. The post holder will also assist the gnotobiology specialist in specific tasks performed routinely in the facility, which will require direct contact with animals. The post holder will also undertake administrative tasks associated with the running of the germ-free facility and the use of UEA’s Disease Modelling Unit.
