Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Applications Close: 11 March 2018

Salary: £31,250 - £38,100

Contract Length: 3 years

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the Laboratory of Naiara Beraza in the Gut Health and Food Safety Programme at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB).

Background:

Research at the Beraza Lab focuses on defining the fundamental mechanisms regulating the liver-gut interaction to preserve life-long health. Based on the association of liver disease with disturbances in intestinal barrier function, this project will seek to define the role of key metabolic regulators in controlling intestinal function and microbiome composition, and how this impacts on liver physiology. Our work has a strong mechanistic and translational focus.

The role:

The successful candidate will use experimental models to establish the mechanistic mediators of the intestinal-liver communication. The candidate will combine molecular biology techniques with high-throughput methodologies and immune-cell characterisation techniques to characterise the intestinal and liver mechanistic mediators to preserve metabolic homeostasis.

Given the translational nature of our work, the candidate will have the opportunity to translate the results obtained in our well-established experimental models into the clinical setting by collaborating with clinicians at the NNUH Endoscopy Unit co-housed at QI, as well as from our collaborators across the UK and Europe.

The ideal candidate:

To be considered for this post, candidates must possess a PhD in biology, biochemistry or microbiology, or equivalent. They must have knowledge of diverse molecular and cell biology methodologies, as well as data analysis skills. Previous experience of performing histological and immunohistochemical analysis of gut and liver tissue samples with light and fluorescence microscopy is also essential.

The successful applicant will be expected to work with minimal supervision and lead their own project independently; to formulate research questions, design and perform experiments, to critically process and interpret the resulting data and to design future experiments.  The appointed researcher will also show capacity to work in a team, to help other members of our team and to work with internal and external collaborators.  Good communication and organisational skills are also required.

The applicant will contribute to the preparation of research manuscripts and will present the lab-research data in national and international conferences.  The applicant will also assist with students’ supervision.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,250 to £38,100 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This post is for a contract of three years.
