Contract Length: 12 months
Applications are invited for a Research Scientist to join the Mather group at the Quadram Institute in Norwich, UK.
The project:
Research in the Mather group focuses on the genomics, metagenomics and source attribution of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This project is a collaboration with researchers in São Paulo, Brazil, and will exploit whole-genome sequencing of Salmonella isolates from pigs and poultry collected over the last 10 years in Brazil. This will be used to elucidate the genomic epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Salmonella in these populations, including temporal dynamics, bacterial population structure, and phenotype-genotype comparisons.
The role:
The successful post holder will perform microbial whole-genome sequencing using both Illumina and Oxford Nanopore MinION technologies, and will analyse the generated data using various bioinformatics approaches to address the project aims. They will also occasionally present research findings at project meetings, scientific conferences and outreach/training events. The post-holder will also contribute to laboratory management, such as participating in group meetings and supervising visitors to the laboratory.
The ideal candidate:
Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, Epidemiology or related discipline), and experience in working with microbial sequencing data. They should also possess a proven record in scientific writing, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
