Applications are invited for a Research Scientist to join the Mather group at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB) in Norwich, UK.

Background:

Research in the Mather group focuses on the genomics, metagenomics and source attribution of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This project will exploit whole-genome sequencing of cultured isolates to elucidate the genomic epidemiology of selected pathogens from food, humans and animals, together with metagenome sequencing of microbial communities from food samples, to improve our understanding of the contributions of different populations to the overall burden of disease and AMR.

In the Mather group, we will provide you with a stimulating, multidisciplinary training environment that will assist you in your successful scientific development.

The role:

The successful post holder will perform analysis of microbial whole-genome sequencing and metagenome sequencing, from both short and long-read technologies, using samples collected in a structured epidemiological survey of food and other microbial genome datasets. Some sample collection and basic laboratory work may be necessary.

This innovative highly translational research will exploit cutting-edge approaches to lay the foundations for novel ecological interventions in the food chain with direct health and economic benefits, including countering the threat of antimicrobial resistance.

The ideal candidate:

Candidates are expected to have a PhD degree in a relevant subject, with hands-on experience in quantitative data analysis and bioinformatics. Candidates should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively to meet deadlines.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,250 to £38,100 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This post is for a contract of 3 years.
