Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to join the Kingsley Group at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB).
Background:
Research in the Kingsley group focuses on the genomics, molecular epidemiology and host-pathogen interactions of foodborne pathogens. The post holder will collect retail food samples and maintain microbiological and molecular workflows following standard operating protocols and appropriate laboratory practices. The position will support our busy and diverse research laboratory focusing on population genetics of enteric bacteria in the food chain.
The role:
Work will include the isolation of bacteria using culture methods; molecular preparation of samples for whole genome sequence analysis; generating and maintaining a culture and sample collection inventory; providing laboratory support for the Kingsley Research Group projects investigating microbial populations in the food chain.
Weekly workflow will include driving to local retail locations to purchase food products utilising predetermined sampling protocols.
The ideal candidate:
Candidates are expected to have a BSc or equivalent in biomedical science or similar, with hands-on experience in microbiology. Candidates should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively to meet deadlines.
Additional information:
Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,300 to £29,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a fulltime post for a period of 12 months.

The Quadram Institute is a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research. Its mission is to understand how food and the gut microbiota are linked to the promotion of health and the prevention of disease. A partnership between Quadram Institute Bioscience (formerly the Institute of Food Research), the University of East Anglia, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and BBSRC, it brings together scientists and clinicians in a new state-of-the-art building.
