Applications are invited for a Research Scientist to join the Food Databanks National Capability (FDNC) at Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), based in Norwich, UK.

Background:

The Food Databanks National Capability (FDNC) is the leading national provider of new and continuously updated data, knowledge and tools relating to food composition, intake and food systems for use by different end-users including academia, industry, healthcare, government, consumers.

FDNC enables delivery of nutritional policy and high-quality science in support of current and emerging national needs in nutrition (food composition and intake), health (e.g., obesity, healthy ageing) and sustainability (environment, food security).

FDNC data and tools underpin key research priorities in the BBSRC Strategic Frameworks: ‘Agriculture and Food Security’ (‘food safety and nutrition’); ‘Food Nutrition and Health’ (‘nutrition and health’); ‘Bioscience for Health’ (‘nutrition for health’, ‘enabling innovation’).

FDNC supports implementation of recommendations #11 and #12 made to the UK government by the National Food Strategy for England (2021) independent review body, to ‘Create a Better Food System’ and ‘Create a National Food System Data programme’.

The role:

We are looking for a post-doctoral (or masters with appropriate experience) food/nutritional scientist to undertake all aspects relating to the generation of new food composition data for key foods and the publication of data in a variety of formats. The post-holder will support a range of food, nutrition and health projects with various data and tools available to the team.

The ideal candidate:

The ideal candidate will have a PhD (or MSc with appropriate experience) in Food Science or related discipline, and BSc degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Science or related discipline . Ideally you will have a background in nutrition related to public health and an active interest in research into emerging diets, such as transitioning to plant-based diets.

You will have prior experience with generating and/or using food composition data in research and/or surveys (e.g. nutrient intake assessments, nutrition surveys, research studies) and should be able to interact and collaborate with researchers from different disciplines.  You will have strong interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions on a day-to-day basis with the team and external collaborators, and be highly motivated and organised to work independently, using initiative and applying problem solving skills.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £32,578 to £39,938 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post offered on a permanent basis.

The Quadram Institute is a new interdisciplinary research institute dedicated to understanding how food and microbes interact to promote health and prevent disease.
