Applications are invited for a Research Scientist to join the Laboratory of Prof Narbad in the Science Operations programme at Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), based in Norwich, UK.

Background:

We are seeking a Research Scientist to manage our in vitro model systems that replicate the physiological and microbiological conditions of the human intestines.

The human gut microbiota is extremely complex and estimated to comprise of more than 1000 species. It is now clear that the gut bacteria play an essential role in the development and maintenance of human health. At QIB we have established a number of different in vitro model systems that replicate the physiological and microbiological conditions of the different regions of the intestines. This is a core facility that will be utilised by a number of different research groups within the Institute to study interactions between the gut bacteria as well as the impact of diet and bioactives on the human gut microbiome.

The role:

This six-month position will contribute towards fundamental research on the impact of the gut microbiome in food and health.

The purpose of this role is to take responsibility for managing and running the human colon model facility at QIB. The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of our colon model facility.

These responsibilities include the training and supervision of the students and post-doctoral researchers that use the colon models for a range of different projects, maintenance of the equipment, and management of the associated budget. The post holder will ensure that all experiments are performed following the appropriate safety and ethical guidelines. They will also assist QIB group leaders in experimental design related to the in vitro colon model work.

The ideal candidate:

The successful post holder will be a graduate in Biological Sciences, Microbiology or Molecular Biology with experience of microbial fermentations technology and motivation to work on complex microbial communities would be advantageous.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £33,050 to £40,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post for a contract of 6 months.
