Research Scientist

Applications Close: 03 May 2018

Salary: £31,250 to £38,100 per annum depending on qualifications and experience

Contract Length: 10 months

Applications are invited for a Research Scientist to join the Food Databanks National Capability (FDNC) at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB).

Background:

The Quadram Institute is at the forefront of a new interface between food science, gut biology and health, developing solutions to worldwide challenges in food-related disease and human health.

FDNC (https://fdnc.quadram.ac.uk/) generates, uses and provides data on the composition of foods eaten in the UK which underpins food, nutrition, health research and policy.  This data provides nutritional information for food labelling and intake leading into wider research into links between diet and health at the Quadram Institute and across the UK biosciences community, helping to inform policy to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The role:

The role will focus on work in the Food Databanks National Capability on an MRC Global Challenges Research Fund project that aims to assess status and provide training and capacity development in the use of improved standardized methodologies for food composition and food intake methods, and use of suitable biomarkers of nutritional value and health outcomes. This training and capacity development will enable more robust measurements that underpin dietary monitoring and policy and wider nutritional research needs in low and medium income countries in the World Health Organisation’s Eastern Mediterranean Region.

The ideal candidate:

Applicants should have a background in food, nutrition and health research and project management experience, ideally via international collaborative projects. A degree or PhD, or equivalent experience, in nutrition or food science or a related field is essential. Knowledge and experience of production and use of food composition data and dietary assessment methods is also essential. The successful applicant will be expected to work with minimal supervision and work with the project team and external collaborators to produce the key project outcomes and deliverables.  Good communication and organisational skills are essential for this post.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,250 to £38,100 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This post is for a contract of 10 months.
