Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and motivated Yeast Resources Technician to join the Science Operations department at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB).

 

Background:

Quadram Institute Bioscience requires a Yeast Resources Technician to maintain its collection of over 4000 strains. These strains have been collected and characterised by the National Collection of Yeast Cultures (NCYC) National Capability.

 

The role:

Funded through QIB’s Core Capability Grant, and based in QIB Science Operations, the Yeast Resources Technician will:

  • Provide a range of services and yeasts underpinning QIB’s research programme in Gut Microbiome and Health, particularly research studying the role of yeasts in gut health.
  • Work with QIB’s commercial Company, QIB Extra Ltd to provide a high quality applied research service to food, diet and health and allied commercial sectors. This service will operate under the NCYC brand.

The successful post holder will maintain and preserve stocks of a commercial yeast collection. The candidate should have experience in preservation techniques both handling liquid nitrogen and freeze-drying technique, take responsibility for yeast cultivation, stock management, and customer supply. They will also perform DNA extraction, PCR, DNA fingerprinting and DNA sequence analysis using bioinformatics tools.

The candidate will be required to work to tight deadlines liaising with researchers in the Gut Microbiome and Health programme, the NCYC team and commercial customers.

 

The ideal candidate:

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level, or equivalent, in a biological field. They will possess good molecular biology skills and previous experience of working in yeast fermentation. Experience in a commercial lab and knowledge of the brewing sector is desirable but not essential.

The successful candidate will possess ability to work with minimal supervision and effectively in a team environment, good communication skills, and excellent time management, record keeping and commitment to meet deadlines.

High levels of accuracy and good attention to detail along with ability to manage a Magento based website and good IT skills are essential.

The successful candidate must be a proactive person willing to learn and adapt to the commercial demands of the collection and understanding the needs of academic researchers.

 

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,300 to £29,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This post is for a contract of 2 years.
